Updated: Jun 14, 2023

August is often a time where one’s bank account feels the weight of summer expenses – especially now with the cost of living ramping up what feels like week-on-week. Whether you have ventured on holiday, spent a small fortune entertaining the kids, or your annual expenses fall during this rather expensive season, there is no doubt that it isn’t just this unbearably hot weather that is making us sweat! Luckily for you, Little Birdie has some ideas on how you can entertain the kids – or yourselves – during the last few weeks of the summer holidays, without creating too much of a dent in your bank account! Keep reading to learn more…

Paddling pools aren’t just for kids…

The added complication of this extremely hot summer is that a lot of the activities that one would normally do, to entertain the kids, are off the table, as it has been way too hot to trudge into London and brave the tube up to this point. Purchasing a paddling pool is a way to introduce some fun for the kids, or you, from the comfort of your own garden! Older kids love them too! And there are some pretty reasonable options out there. Here are a couple of options we’ve selected for you from a recent Mirror article:

1) Bestway 8ft Fast Set Pool – available from Amazon for £34.09. Purchase here.

This is a more robust option with minimal setup; simply inflate the top ring and fill it with water. Perfect for older kids and adults.

2) Intex Swim Centre Family Pool with Seats – available from Amazon for £40.67. Purchase here.

This comes with 4 seats, so whether you want to chill in her

e with the family, or relax with friends and a cheeky Aperol Spritz, the world is your oyster with this option!

3) Bestway Tug Boat Inflatable Play Pool – available from Amazon for £27.95 ). Purchase here.

This is the ideal option for younger kids; with inflatable toys included, it ensures hours of fun!

A day trip to London

A day trip to London can often seem like an expensive day out, but here are a few things you can do that won’t cost you an arm or a leg!

Travel card:

Here’s a Little Birdie Top Tip: Make sure you secure an off-peak family travel card if you plan on getting the tube. If you are unsure of your options, visit the National Rail website, or ask at your local station.

The British Museum:

Visiting the British Museum is a sure-fire way to inject some culture into the summer for the kids and has the added benefit of being free! The galleries are free to wander around; some exhibitions do require a fee, visit the British Museum website to see which exhibitions are currently on.

A picnic lunch

Since the weather is warm, why not spice up the normal lunch routine by opting for a picnic lunch? Waitrose, M&S & Tesco have some great options avail

able for summer. This has the bonus of being much cheaper than eating out and gives the kids the novelty factor of selecting some lunch bits they wouldn’t normally be able to have! Some good spots include Trafalgar Square and South Bank.

A wander around South Bank

Give the kids a real taste of London at South Bank! If you are heading back home via Waterloo, why not have a wander around South Bank as y

our final stop? South Bank is home to skaters, buskers, the London Eye, and an electric atmosphere! On Fridays and weekends, it is also home to the Southbank Food Centre Market – which could also double as your picnic food shop!

Don’t have kids? Here are some options for you to save money & enjoy the last few w

eeks of summer!

South Bank may be a sure win for the kids, but it is also a big winner for the adults amongst us! On the weekends and afternoons and evenings, there are plenty of stalls where you can get drinks, food, and check out the activity on the Thames. There is often music and provides the perfect summer setting to soak up those London vibes.

During the summer months, ther

e is also open-air concerts and events, check out what’s on here.
